During the meeting with the veterans who participated in the Dien Bien Phu campaign 60 years ago, President Sang said that the Party and State eternally remembered the great contributions by war veterans and former volunteer youths to the victorious campaign, which helped end French colonial rule in Vietnam.

He expressed his hope that they would continue popularising the revolutionary tradition for the sake of posterity.

The President also stressed that the State and people shall pay more attention to improving living conditions of families of fallen war heroes and wounded soldiers.

The same day, a wide range of activities was held across the country to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu victory.

A get-together was organised in Ho Chi Minh City to recall memories of the campaign, with the participation of veterans and youths.

Meanwhile, the High Command of Military Zone 7 also held a similar ceremony, bringing together nearly 200 ex-soldiers that fought in the campaign, along with young officers.

Lieutenant General Pham Van Dy, the Zone’s Political Commissar, expressed deep gratitude to war heroes who laid down their lives for national independence and freedom. He said that the zone would make every effort to complete all tasks, thus contributing to the national construction and defence.

Also on May 6, the Vietnam-Laos Friendship Association in Ho Chi Minh City hosted a conference highlighting the fighting alliance and solidarity between Vietnam and Laos in the Dien Bien Phu campaign and the 1953-1954 Winter-Spring Campaign.

Participants underlined the importance of the Dien Bien Phu triumph for the two countries as well as oppressed nations worldwide.

They also said the two countries should continue to promote the special friendship and comprehensive co-operation.
