Dien Bien Phu victory is fruit of Vietnamese Party, army and people, says President

(Bqp.vn) - Dien Bien Phu victory is the fruit of the country’s glorious historical tradition, the clear-sighted leadership of the Party and President Ho Chi Minh, the huge strength of the great national unity bloc, and the strong determination to fight for independence and freedom of the Vietnamese army and people.

President Truong Tan Sang made this remark at a grand meeting held in Dien Bien Phu city on the morning of May 7 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu victory (1954 -2014).

The meeting was attended by Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, former Party General Secretaries Le Kha Phieu and Nong Duc Manh, former President Tran Duc Luong, Politburo member Le Hong Anh, and President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan, among others.

President Sang stressed that Dien Bien Phu was a victory not only of the three Indochinese countries, but also of all oppressed nations in the world.

The Vietnamese Party, State and people treasured significant support from the states and peoples of the Soviet Union, China, socialist countries, and oppressed nations in Asia, Africa and Latin America, as well as progressive people's movements around the world, he said.

He also expressed his deep gratitude and sincere thanks to former army officials, war veterans and Vietnamese heroic mothers whose courage and undaunted fighting spirit contributed to the victory.

He took this occasion to call every Vietnamese citizen and soldier, as well as Overseas Vietnamese, to join hands in overcoming difficulties and to boost the country’s Doi Moi (Renewal) process, making Vietnam a strong, democratic, just and civilised country with rich people.

On behalf of former Dien Bien soldiers, colonel and Hero of People’s Armed Forces Phung Van Khau recalled the fierce fighting he and his comrades experienced in the battlefield 60 years ago, saying that he was honoured to participate and contribute to the glorious victory.

He showed his gratitude to the Party, beloved President Ho, General Vo Nguyen Giap and those who devoted their lives to the triumph.

The meeting continued with a parade featuring processions of the national flag, a portrait of Uncle Ho and the symbols of Dien Bien Phu victory.

The parade, including tens of thousands of people, started from Dien Bien stadium and went through major streets in Dien Bien Phu city, which are adorned with colourful flowers, national flags and slogans marking Dien Bien Phu victory. The five-kilometre parade received enthusiastic response from locals and visitors.

Prior to the meeting, a delegation of Vietnamese leaders led by Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong laid wreaths and offered incense to war heroes resting at the A1 Hill Cemetery in Dien Bien province.
