General Phan Van Giang receives Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces

(Bqp.vn) - Defence Minister General Phan Van Giang hosted a reception for Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces General Vong Pisen in Hanoi on October 17.

During the reception, General Phan Van Giang extended his congratulations to Cambodia for its accomplishments in both domestic and international affairs, which have been spearheaded by the Cambodian People’s Party for over seventy years. He particularly commended the successful seventh National Assembly election held in July. General Phan Van Giang expressed his belief that under the guidance of the Cambodian Government and Prime Minister Hun Manet, Cambodia will continue to achieve even greater feats in the coming years, leading to an enhanced position and role on the global platform.

General Phan Van Giang expressed his admiration for the positive results achieved during the discussions held earlier that day between General Vong Pisen and Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Tan Cuong, Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army. He commended the broad and successful collaboration between the two parties across various domains, with a special emphasis on personnel training, exchange of experiences, border safeguarding, and mutual assistance within multilateral forums and mechanisms, particularly those under the leadership of ASEAN.

For his part, General Vong Pisen conveyed his appreciation to the Vietnamese Party, State, military, and people for their invaluable assistance in Cambodia’s fight against colonialism and imperialism. He acknowledged the crucial role played by Vietnam in helping Cambodia overcome the genocide and reconstruct its socio-economic foundations. General Pisen expressed admiration for the events organized by the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defence, such as the Vietnam International Defence Expo 2022, and assured that the Cambodian Ministry of National Defence and armed forces would continue to support future activities organized by Vietnam.

Earlier on the same day, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Tan Cuong, Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army and Deputy Defence Minister, hosted an official reception for and held talks with General Vong Pisen, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces.

In his welcoming remarks, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Tan Cuong expressed his belief that the visit would bring fresh impetus to further strengthen the cooperation between the armed forces of Vietnam and Cambodia.

During the talks, both leaders expressed their appreciation for the fruitful collaboration between their respective agencies and units since Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Tan Cuong’s official visit to Cambodia in March 2022. They highlighted the notable achievements in various areas, including delegation exchanges, defence policy dialogues at the deputy ministerial level, joint patrols, and the maintenance of cooperation mechanisms. Both sides acknowledged the successful collaboration between their border guard forces and military zones in ensuring security and social order along the shared border areas. Additionally, they emphasized the importance of educating their respective populations, particularly the younger generation, about the significance of solidarity and mutual support between the two countries and their armed forces.

Both parties reached an agreement to strengthen their coordination in order to contribute to the healthy development of the friendly and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Cambodia. They emphasized the importance of establishing reliable, effective, and substantial ties and pledged to collaborate in making recommendations on military and defense matters, thereby reaffirming the significance of such cooperation as a crucial pillar in the bilateral relationship.

Furthermore, they emphasized their commitment to increasing delegation exchanges and maximizing the utilization of cooperative mechanisms and models, including joint patrols, annual conferences, military-civilian solidarity, and exchanges of young officers. They highlighted the priority of collaboration in personnel training and expressed their intention to launch joint activities in support of the first Vietnam - Cambodia - Laos border defense friendship exchange.

Recognizing the complex global and regional environment, both sides agreed that ASEAN-led mechanisms continue to play a central role in the region. They acknowledged the importance of these mechanisms in promoting dialogue and cooperation among member states and external partners, with the aim of fostering peace, stability, and regional development.
