(Bqp.vn) - On February 20th 2014, Viettel (Vietnam Military Telecom Corporation) was awarded the Hero of the Armed Forces title for its significant contributions to the development of mobile networks and internet services in Vietnam.

Under the leadership and direction of the Central Military Commission, Ministry of National Defence, Viettel has achieved great achievements in the fields of telecommunications and information technology in Vietnam. Being established in 1989, Viettel is now one of the largest corporations in Vietnam with revenues estimated at US$7.7 billion in 2013. With its extensive network, Viettel has spread telecom services to every region of the country, establishing high rates of mobile phone and internet penetration. It has a network of over 50,000 base transceiver stations and nearly 180,000 kilometres of optical fibre cables. It is the only mobile carrier to have full network coverage over the country’s remote areas and islands.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan congratulated and praised the achievements that Viettel has achieved in the last years. She also stressed that Viettel should continue to invest in research in order to master advanced technologies, maintain its important role in the economy, and contribute in raising the prestige of the Army in particular and the country in general in the international arena.
